Abstract
Early exposure of anesthetics causes neuroplasticity and lasting neurotoxicity including cognitive impairment and abnormal behavior in preclinical studies. Translational relevance of animal experimental data to humans is the subject of controversy. The studies on whether exposure to anesthetics during childhood affects brain development have been actively researched. However the results have been conflicting. The purpose of this paper was to review the published animal studies and clinical trials and to focus on recently published well-designed articles and FDA label changes. These considerations will give a direction to study the effects of anesthesia on brain development.
